How to connect to MySQL ? (1)

What do you need when you want to connect to MySQL from a java application ? First you need to download the JDBC driver, which can be found at www.mysql.com.
I'm using MySQL for my java web applications and I use Tomcat as a web server. Therefor, I've installed the JDBC driver in C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 5.0\common\lib. This driver is inside a jar or Java ARchive, called mysql-connector-java-3.1.6-bin.jar. A JAR can be opened with Winzip and it contains the definitions of all .class files you need when you need the functionality of this java archive.

Whenever you are using JAR's or Java archives for extra functionality, you will have to install them in the common/lib folder of Tomcat.
